He might currently be all alone, but the box is a reminder that other humans still exist - and another version of life does too. He has to make the best out of his awful circumstances in the present, but there's a chance that, one day, Chuck will get to return the package to its original sender and look back on his time on the island while finally being removed from it. As previously mentioned, though his time isolated on the island is lonely and excruciatingly painful, the thought that there is, in fact, a world to return to keeps him trudging forward. The FedEx package, and the way Chuck leaves it unopened, depict it as a vague sort of beacon of hope.

You’ll see big trees and greenery in areas where no plants have a right to be. Look for signs of underground water sources and springs. Three or four days without any water, and you’ll die.

Odds are they’ll be pleased with the final product because Hanks’ character – though clearly not a trained survivalist – certainly does many things right, like collecting rainwater in leaves and coconut shells.

The BOSS experts – who have not yet seen the movie – were so concerned that director Robert Zemeckis and Hanks kept things real that at one point they sat on the floor of a conference room at Universal Studios and built a fire with two pieces of wood. “We tested it, and it’s actually incredibly strong cordage,” says Westcott. At one point, he cannibalizes videotape to make a rope. In the movie, Noland makes tools from apparently useless products of civilization that have washed up on the beach. Wescott advised “Cast Away” screenwriter William Broyles Jr., and took him on a week’s trip on the desert coast of Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. Almost everything Chuck does – except foolishly go shirtless – to find food, make a fire or build a raft was tested by survival expert David Wescott of the Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS). IF YOU were shipwrecked on a desert island, you could follow the example of Tom Hanks’ Chuck Noland from “Cast Away” – and probably be OK.
